‘Winnie’ movie gets a date
Image Entertainment has announced the release date for their movie about Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
Deadline reports that Winnie – which started production in 2010 and stars Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson as Winnie and Terrence Howard as former president Nelson Mandela – will be released across the globe on 6 September.
The film, helmed by South African director Darrell Roodt, has been moved up to three months ahead of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, starring Idris Elba as Madiba and Naomie Harris as Winnie, which releases on 29 November.
Based on Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob’s book Winnie Mandela: A Life, the drama "chronicles the life of Winnie Mandela from her childhood through her marriage and her husband’s incarceration".
According to Image Entertainment’s Chief Acquisition Officer Bill Bromiley, "Both Jennifer Hudson (as Winnie) and Terrence Howard (as Nelson Mandela) deliver powerful performances that depict the lives of two influential people of our time. They are a force to be reckoned with on screen, showcasing the Mandelas’ journey through their struggles and triumphs."
