Sir Patrick Stewart: Classical Titan and Global Star

October 29, 2026

Acclaimed British actor Sir Patrick Stewart has died at 86 at his Los Angeles residence, following battles with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

Hailing from Mirfield, Stewart rose through regional repertory theatre and the Bristol Old Vic to become an associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company during the late 1960s. He gained international renown leading “Star Trek: The Next Generation” as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and portraying Professor Charles Xavier across seven “X-Men” releases.

Despite Hollywood fame, the knighted performer constantly returned to live theatre, securing Olivier accolades for his one-man interpretation of “A Christmas Carol” and “Hamlet”, whilst also sharing the stage with Sir Ian McKellen in “Waiting for Godot”.

Offstage, Stewart married singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell in 2013 after meeting at a Brooklyn eatery five years earlier. Revering her intellect, Stewart reflected to an international publication: “My life is perpetually interesting – and it’s largely as a result of Sunny.”

Alongside his cultural contributions, the Huddersfield Town supporter campaigned against dog fighting and fostered shelter canines. He is survived by Ozell, alongside two adult children, Daniel and Sophie, from his previous union with Sheila Falconer.
