Whalum headlines Summer Jazz Series
International jazz musician Kirk Whalum will headline the Western Cape Paarl Sumer Jazz Series at the Liquifruit Amphitheatre, on 30 March.
The Grammy-award winning saxophonist and writer will close the inaugural series which began in January, following his performance at the Cape Town Jazz Festival on 29 March.
The Summer Jazz series is the first venture by organisers espAfrica, also producers of the Cape Town Jazz festival, to officially extend the celebrated international music event.
CEO of espAfrika, Rashid Lombard, said he is pleased that the series has received support from a diverse audience. He says it’s indicative of the inclusive nature of the jazz genre.
"Jazz as a genre is broad and all encompassing. The Summer Jazz Series, located in the outdoor arena on the outskirts of Paarl, has drawn crowds from close-by and from much farther afield."
"It has also encouraged families to turn out and we have seen youngsters, their teenage siblings and their parents all enjoy a good and wholesome evening’s entertainment with many of the concert-goers returning to subsequent events," he added.
Opening for Kirk Whalum will be local bassist and his band, The Jonathan Rubain Band.
They join the likes of local artists such as Judith Sephuma and Jimmy Nevis who have also performed on the Summer Jazz Series stage.
CEO of event sponsor Lion of Africa Insurance, Adam Samie said he hopes the series will promote future collaborations between the international and local artists who grace its stage.
