Riaan Cruywagen to retire
Riaan Cruywagen is retiring.
According to Volksblad, the 67-year-old – who has worked for the SABC for 37 years – will read the news on SABC2 for the last time on 26 November.
Acting head of news and actuality at the SABC, Jimi Matthews, confirmed the news on Thursday, telling Beeld that Cruywagen "is 67. He’s retiring".
According to Beeld, Cruywagen – who has reached cult status in recent years – says he has read the 7pm news more than 7000 times since he first appeared on screens in 1975.
"This means that I couldn’t spend time with my family for at least 7000 evenings, so I must say I’m looking forward to the evenings at home."
While he confirmed his retirement to Volksblad last night, Cruywagen would not elaborate until the SABC announced his departure, telling the paper that in all the years he has been involved in news, he had never broken an embargo.
