Miley hits back at Sinead

October 04, 2013

Miley Cyrus has hit back at Sinead O’Connor after the Irish singer posted an open letter on her blog advising Cyrus to stop "prostituting" herself for the music industry.

The exchange began after Cyrus told Rolling Stone that her music video for Wrecking Ball was inspired by O’Connor’s for Nothing Compares 2 U.

The video, directed by fashion photographer Terry Richardson, shows 20-year-old Cyrus swinging naked on a huge demolition ball, licking a sledgehammer and crying into the camera.

In a letter on her blog addressed to Cyrus, O’Connor wrote: "I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos.

"It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

"Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women."

In response to the letter, which went viral online yesterday, Cyrus fired off a series of tweets on Thursday, starting with a picture of herself in bed and captioned with the traditional Irish greeting "Top of the mornin to ya."

"Before Amanda Bynes .. there was .. ." she captioned a screenshot of a series of O’Connor’s tweets in which the Irish star referred to her own mental health problems, and asked for her Twitter followers to recommend a psychiatrist.

O’Connor was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Cyrus also tweeted a picture of O’Connor ripping up a photograph of the pope during her 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL), before going on to reference her upcoming appearance on the comedy skit.

She posted: "Sinead. I don’t have time to write you an open letter cause Im hosting & performing on SNL this week.

"So if youd like to meet up and talk lemme know in your next letter. :)"

Cyrus has been making headlines in recent weeks after appearing scantily-clad at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she twerked her way through a raunchy performance with Blurred Lines singer Robin Thicke.

Cyrus recently announced the end of her engagement to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, who she had been dating since meeting on the set of the 2010 movie The Last Song.
