King Charles III Visits President Trump
King Charles III is set to deliver a landmark address to a joint session of the US Congress on Tuesday, 29 April 29, as only the second British monarch to do so, following Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The speech comes during a four-day state visit to Washington DC, timed to mark America’s 250th anniversary of independence.
The King will call for “reconciliation and renewal” between the two nations, declaring that “time and again, our two countries have always found ways to come together.”
He will urge lawmakers to defend democratic values, support NATO, and protect Ukraine, framing the transatlantic alliance as built on “a generosity of spirit and a duty to foster compassion, to promote peace, to deepen mutual understanding.”
The visit carries particular weight amid strained US-UK relations, with President Trump repeatedly criticising Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer over Britain’s refusal to take part in the US war with Iran.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the visit was crucial for “people-to-people links,” adding: “There’s two and a half million jobs that are dependent on the trade between our two countries.”
On Monday, 27 April, the King and Queen Camilla met Trump and First Lady Melania at the White House, toured a newly-expanded beehive, and attended a 600-guest garden party at the British Embassy.
