Ex-Gang Leader Found Guilty of Tupac Shakur’s Murder
Duane Keith Davis has been convicted of the murder of rap icon Tupac Shakur, nearly 30 years to the day after the rapper’s death.
Shakur was fatally shot during a drive-by shooting on the night of 7 September 1996 while travelling down the Las Vegas strip in Nevada. He was 25-years-old.
In 2023, Davis – who previously headed the California-based South Side Compton Crips gang – was arrested by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police. At the time, he denied being the one who pulled the trigger, although he admitted to being in the same vehicle that pulled up alongside Shakur’s on the night in question.
Following a week-long trial, a 12-person jury gave its verdict at the Clark County District Court in Las Vegas on Monday, 31 August.
The jury found Davis guilty of first-degree murder of the “California Love” hitmaker. In the state of Nevada, first-degree murder carries penalties ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment.
Davis’ sentencing is slated for 13 October; until then, the 63-year-old ex-gang boss will be held in custody without bond. He is also planning to appeal the verdict.
