‘I’m not really made for this industry’

Britney Spears has opened up about her personal insecurities and the pressure of fame in a new E! documentary.

In the TV special I am Britney Jean – which showcases the preparation for her massive two-year Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood – Spears describes herself as very "shy" person, despite her sexy on-stage persona, and insists she’s "not really made for this industry".

"This is all I’ve known all my life – cameras, being followed, being part of the industry."

She added: "I have always been kind of shy, since I was a little girl. It’s who I am to be modest, so I really can’t help it. I turn into this different person … seriously, bipolar disorder."

She also referenced her 2007 public meltdown and her time out of the spotlight in which she got her life back on track.

She revealed: "There was a time in my life when I couldn’t ever leave the house without 20 cars following me. I felt very alienated from the public. But as time passed, they lightened up and they kind of went away after I wouldn’t come out of the house for like two years."

Spears also revealed that she took a very "hands-on" approach to her two-year Vegas residency, saying she had a hand in everything from the sets to the costumes.

"This is a big year for me, it’s the first show I’ve done in two years … I am trying to let myself relax a little bit but not too much because I know that I have a lot ahead of me."

But she added: "Pressure is a funny thing. Sometimes I tend to go inward when I’m under pressure. I tend to keep it all in. I don’t express myself too much. If I’m really nervous I’m really quiet. But I think I thrive under pressure."
