‘Fifty Shades’ film gets writer

October 10, 2012

Kelly Marcel will write the script for the big-screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Marcel’s previous body of work includes the upcoming Saving Mr Banks  – about Walt Disney’s pursuit of the film rights to Marry Poppins – and the now-cancelled TV sci-fi drama Terra Nova.

Producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca have both expressed their delight at the decision, with Brunetti revealing: "We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelly’s engagement with the characters and world E.L. James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our ‘Fifty Shades’ family."

De Luca added: "Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humour and depth of character, which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks."

However, not everyone was thrilled by the Marcel’s choice. American Psycho author – who has followed the book’s development into film closely – tweeted after the news broke: "Kelly Marcel?!? KELLY MARCEL?!? Kelly Marcel is WRITING the script for "Fifty Shades of Grey"?!? THIS is the movie they want to make? ARGH."

He followed that with a tweet that read: "Kelly Marcel: the creator of (gulp) ‘Terra Nova’ and a Mary Poppins bio-pic has been blessed by EL James and no one can stop her. Dear God."

The casting for the Fifty Shades of Grey film has been a topic of hot debate in Hollywood over recent months. Black Swan actress Mila Kunis and Harry Potter star Emma Watson are just two of the names linked to the role of Anastasia Steele, while Ryan Gosling, Vampire Diaries actor Ian Somerhalder and porn star James Deen have been rumoured for the role of Christian Grey.
