Disney introduces gay couple

June 25, 2013

The Disney Channel plans to introduce its first same-sex couple, earning praise from stars including Miley Cyrus and Evan Rachel Wood.

Good Luck Charlie is set to feature a character with two lesbian mothers, with Disney telling TV Guide: "This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors… Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."

Meanwhile, gay rights advocate Cyrus (20) – who found fame on Disney’s Hannah Montana – tweeted her delight at the development.

She wrote: "is this true?!?!?! I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation. They control…so much of what kids think! Life isn’t bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING (sic)"

Evan Rachel Wood – who came out as bisexual in 2011 – was also happy with the announcement, retweeting a link to the news and adding "Hell yea (sic)."
