A-list actors to film in SA
Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Taylor Swift, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard and Brenton Thwaites are heading to Cape Town to film sci-fi thriller The Giver this month.
The new film – based on a 1993 young adult novel by Lois Lowry – is set in a dystopian society and stars Australian newcomer Thwaites as a young boy who is selected for as the Receiver of Memories. He works with The Giver (Bridges), who teaches the boy to use his gifts and imparts dark secrets on the youth.
Streep will play the antagonistic Chief Elder, who assigns the youngsters to their tasks and maintains order in a society which knows no sickness or conflict. However, that authority is put in danger when The Giver shares the secrets behind the engineered utopia that created conformism.
The movie is set to start filming on 7 October in Cape Town, and will be directed by Salt’s Phil Noyce.
The film is set to hit theaters in the United States on 15 August 2014.
