World Cup Kick-Off: Global Music Icons Take Centre Stage
A constellation of global music superstars is set to illuminate the FIFA World Cup with an unprecedented trio of opening ceremonies tonight, Thursday 11 June.
Rather than a single launch, producer Marco Balich has crafted distinct, star-studded showcases for each host nation, starting roughly 90 minutes before the football action begins.
The festivities begin in Mexico City at the Estadio Azteca. Headliners Shakira and Burna Boy will perform “Dai Dai”, the tournament’s official song aimed at fundraising for education. They are joined by a vibrant billing including J Balvin, Salma Hayek, and Tyla, who will sing the South African national anthem.
On Friday, 12 June, the celebrations will move north. Toronto’s BMO Field will host Canadian favourites Alanis Morissette and Michael Buble. Later that day, Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium takes the spotlight with a heavyweight line-up featuring Katy Perry, Future, LISA, Rema, and Anitta.
Reflecting on the scale of the multi-nation event, FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated: “The Fifa World Cup is a moment the world shares, and that begins with how we open it.”
Looking further ahead, music enthusiasts can also anticipate the tournament’s final, where Shakira, Madonna, and BTS are scheduled for a spectacular halftime performance.
