‘Vrou Soek ‘n Boer’ comes out tops
Newly released romantic comedy Vrou Soek ‘n Boer dominated local box office in its opening weekend, with earnings that trumped Oscar-winning pictures Dallas Buyers’ Club and American Hustle.
The Afrikaans film, directed by Maynard Kraak, earned more than R1.3 million at the South African box office following its release on 7 March, making it third in the top 10 behind epic sequel 300: Rise of the Empire in first and animation The Nut Job, in second.
Deemed the "perfect date movie," the film attracted almost 31 000 viewers from 7- 9 March, catering to a diverse audience, despite being primarily aimed at a female viewers.
Kraak told ScreenAfrica: "There are enough twists in the plot and ample humour that will be enjoyed by men and the rest of the family. The structure of the film brings something new and unpredictable," he said.
He said he aimed to unite the South Africans by telling a story that is "light, but maintains its integrity, and is always truthful".
"My burning desire is for South African film to make that step forward, and for our audiences across the language and race demographic to be proud of our own stories brought to the screen," he added.
Vrou Soek ‘n Boer centres on city slicker Marieke Viljoen who abandons her upmarket Sandton lifestyle for a quiet life in the Drakensberg countryside. She must make a difficult decision when a match-making scheme forces her to choose between two suitors.
