Nolan’s Grand Mythological Epic Lands In Cinemas
Christopher Nolan’s 250-million-dollar adaptation of The Odyssey arrives in cinemas tomorrow, Friday 17 July, capturing immense critical acclaim as full reviews drop today.
Shot entirely on IMAX film, this ambitious six-country production traded Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) for practical effects, forcing its star-studded cast to row a reconstructed Viking ship on real seas.
Led by Matt Damon’s morally complex Odysseus, the film subverts traditional Hollywood tropes by utilising American accents and colloquial dialogue. Robert Pattinson also features as a “creepy and amusing” antagonist, while Anne Hathaway plays a fierce Penelope.
The three-hour blockbuster earned widespread five-star reviews ahead of its Friday release. Critics praised its relentless, non-linear pacing and magnificent action sequences, though some felt the spectacle occasionally distanced the emotional depth.
Classicists offered mixed responses to the narrative changes. Mary Beard defended the contemporary language as a great introduction to Homer, though she noted the main character lacked the original’s humor.
However, Emily Hauser criticised Nolan’s treatment of female agency, noting he “inexcusably turns Penelope into the executor of her enslaved woman.”
Ultimately, the film stands as a monumental cinematic achievement, delivering a rich, magical experience.
