July 14, 2026

The international film community is in mourning following the sudden and unexpected death of legendary actor Sir Sam Neill, who passed away in Sydney, Australia, on Monday, 13 July 2026, at the age of 78. Surrounded by his loved ones at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Neill’s passing came as a shock to fans worldwide, particularly after his recent triumph over stage-three blood cancer.

In an emotional statement, his family shared that he passed “with the dignity that has characterised his whole life”. The family added, “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free”.

Best known globally for his iconic portrayal of paleontologist Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, the Northern Ireland-born, New Zealand-raised actor enjoyed a prolific five-decade career spanning hits like The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, and the BBC drama Peaky Blinders.

Tributes from world leaders quickly poured in. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hailed the actor as “one of the greats,” writing, “For more than fifty years he took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today”. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also praised his resilience, describing him as “wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic,” noting that Neill “fought illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction that gave strength to his every performance”.
