Hollywood stars pay tribute to Hoffman

Hollywood stars took to social media to mourn the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The 46-year-old Oscar winner was found dead in his New York apartment yesterday (2 February) after an apparent heroin overdose, and celebrities have lined up to pay their respects to the late Oscar-winner.

The 46-year-old Oscar winner was found dead this morning (02.02.14) of an apparent drugs overdose, and many have rushed to pay their respects to the star, widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation.

Comedy icon Jim Carrey tweeted: "Dear Philip, a beautiful beautiful soul. For the most sensitive among us the noise can be too much. Bless your heart."

Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul tweeted: "We lost one of the greats today. Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP my friend. You will be missed always and forever.

Mia Farrow wrote on Twitter: "OH NO!!!!! Philip Seymour Hoffman has died. A truly kind, wonderful man and one of our greatest actors – ever."

Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood wrote: "Heartbroken and shocked. what a true loss. rest in peace, Philip Seymour Hoffman".

Director Kevin Smith was a little more rough, writing: "This truly blows. PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN has died  … First noticed him in SCENT OF A WOMAN. Brilliant actor. So sad…(sic)" 

Actress Andie MacDowell added: "Phillip Seymour Hoffman was not only a genius actor but a kind, generous man RIP."

Philip is survived by his partner, costume designer Mimi O’Donnell, and their three children Tallulah (7), Cooper (10) and Willa (5).

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers," the family said in a statement.

At the time of his death, Hoffman reportedly had seven days of work left on the final two Hunger Games films, and was working on a new comedy-drama TV series called Happyish.

Hunger Games studio Lionsgate Studios released a statement saying: "Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We’re very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send  our deepest condolences to Philip’s family."
