Cape Town – Politicians, rugby players and TV presenters completed the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday.

TV personality Liezel van der Westhuizen, said it was an “incredible day”, even though she had to walk for a bit after getting cramps going up Chapman’s Peak.

Charity

Van der Westhuizen, who rode a special bicycle equipped with an iPad, completed the cycle tour for charity.

It was the task of supporters to ‘like’ Pick n Pay’s Facebook page in order for Van der Westhuizen to progress 10m on her 110 km route.

For every ‘like’ she could move 10m forward and for every 10km (1000 ‘likes’) she donated a bicycle to Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy in Cape Town.

She wrote the following on on Monday: “To all the Pick’nPay Facebook Fans! Wow! You rock! Thank you for the great support you gave me on the #pnplikebike project. We raised 20bicycles for Velokhaya with all your support. THANK YOU”

Rugby players

Victor Matfield, former Springbok and Bulls player, participated in the Argus Cycle Tour for the first time. “It was really amazing,” he said.

“One of the highlights was in Hout Bay where people played music, and you also knew – from here it’s downhill.”

Former WP rugby captains Corne Corné Krige en Tiaan Strauss, completed the race together on mountain bikes.

According to Krige he’s done the cycle tour in strong winds so many times, that the hot weather didn’t bother him at all.

Lipstick

In her red nails, a bit of lipstick and a teddy bear on her backpack, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille also completed the cycle tour.

Actress Vanessa Haywood, who cycled with Helen Zille, : “A HUGE thank u to everyone for the fantastic messages!! Had an awesome, very hot morning!! I now need FOOD! And a pool!”

Top Billing presenter Janez Vermeiren completed the race in 3 hours and 25 minutes.
