Arctic Monkeys rule at Brit Awards

February 20, 2014

The Arctic Monkeys ruled the 2014 Brit Awards, scooping the night’s two biggest prizes.

The band – consisting of Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Matt Helders and Nick O’Malley – won the Best British Group prize and British Album of the Year for AM at the event, held at London’s O2 Arena last night (19 February).

While accepting the award for Best Group Turner quipped: "That 15 quid we put on One Direction has gone down the drain.

"There’s a lot of people we need to thank, but they need to hear their names read out as much as you need to hear of people you don’t know."

Picking up Best Album later in the night, which saw them become the first band to do the double – win Best British album and Best British group – three times, Turner added: "That rock’n’roll, it looks like it’s fading away, but it’ll never die."

Meanwhile, David Bowie also won big after securing the Best Male Solo Artist accolade, 30 years on from his first win in 1984, becoming the oldest recipient of an award in the history of the Brit Awards, and chose Kate Moss to collect his prize for him. And speak on his behalf.

"I’m completely delighted to have a Brit for being the best male – but I am, aren’t I Kate?" the model read.

"I think it’s a great way to end the day. Thank you very, very much and Scotland stay with us," he added, in reference to September’s upcoming independence referendum.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Lorde beat stars including Lady Gaga for best international female, while Bruno Mars scooped the male version.

Ellie Goulding was named the Best British Female Artist, and took to the stage to perform her hit Burn.

Other stars to perform included Beyonce with her track XO, Bruno Mars with Treasure, Katy Pretty with Dark Horse and the Arctic Monkeys with their song R U Mine.
