50 denies domestic violence
50 Cent has denied charges of domestic violence and vandalism brought against him.
The rapper – real name Curtis Jackson – has been accused of kicking an unnamed ex-girlfriend and destroying some of her property during a dispute at her California home on 23 June.
The rapper’s New York attorney, Scott Leemo, was quoted as saying: "Curtis Jackson denies these allegations as made against him. It is important to note, Mr Jackson has not been arrested and there is no warrant outstanding for his arrest. (We) are currently conducting our own investigation into these allegations."
50 Cent is facing five charges – including one count of domestic violence and four counts of vandalism – and City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a statement: "Regardless of perceived celebrity or notoriety, domestic violence is a serious crime, and alleged perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by this office."
Police officers were called to the property where the unnamed woman – who told police she had been in a three-year relationship and has a baby with the rapper – claimed she had locked herself in her bedroom after an altercation with the star.
She further alleged that 50 Cent broke down the door and kicked her, causing injury and an estimated $7100 in damage to her home.
The rapper is expected to appear in court on 22 July. If convicted, he could face up to five years in jail and $46 000 in fines.
