Two Decades in the Making: Arsenal Crowned EPL Champions
Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for an English Premier League (EPL) title after Manchester City’s 1-1 draw at Bournemouth handed the Gunners the crown with one game to spare.
City needed a victory to extend the race, but Erling Haaland’s late equaliser proved insufficient following teenager Eli Junior Kroupi’s first-half goal for the Cherries. The result left Mikel Arteta’s squad four points clear at the summit of the EPL table, sparking wild celebrations at their training ground.
The result marks Arsenal’s first league title since the legendary “Invincibles” era in 2003/04, breaking a six-year trophy drought after three consecutive runner-up finishes.
With the EPL title gone, City ends the week on a turbulent note. Fresh off securing the Football Association Cup against Chelsea, reports have emerged that manager Pep Guardiola will depart at the end of the season.
Guardiola conceded the title gracefully, praising his former assistant Arteta: “On behalf of all Man City and my team, congratulations Arsenal, Mikel [Arteta], his staff, backroom staff, all the players, fans for this Premier League. They deserve it!”
While Arsenal will officially hoist the trophy on Sunday, 24 May, after playing Crystal Palace, their historic campaign is not yet complete. The newly crowned EPL champions will travel to Budapest to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on 30 May, keeping dreams of a continental double alive.
