Roy Keane Side-Eyes Man U’s Title Chances
Roy Keane believes Manchester United’s recent summer transfer splurge will not shift their fortunes for the English Premier League (EPL) title under Michael Carrick.
United have taken to reconfiguring their midfield approach by signing Chelsea’s Andrey Santos on a £48-million deal, while activating the £35-million release clause in Youri Tielemans’ contract with Aston Villa. The move comes after Casemiro departed the club and Manuel Ugarte sustained a serious knee injury.
The Red Devils are also closing in on a £65-million deal for Brighton star Carlos Baleba to pair with rising star Kobbie Mainoo.
Despite these investments – which complement last summer’s £200-million attack overhaul – Keane believes defensive vulnerabilities remain the club’s primary obstacle.
Speaking to an online footballing news outlet, the 55-year-old former Manchester United captain acknowledged the midfield additions offer good depth, but argued they lack title-winning quality.
“United’s big problems are still going to be defensively,” Keane stated. “On paper, [the midfield] jumps out as really good players. But is there a league-winning midfield there? Probably not. No, I don’t see it.”
Keane also labeled Tielemans a “safety bet” who, despite being a reliable EPL player, will not elevate United to the absolute top. For Carrick, fixing the holes in the club’s defence remains crucial if they are to bag silverware this season.
