Sandro Tonali in Spurs’ Crosshairs
Tottenham Hotspur are looking to usher in a bold new era under manager Roberto De Zerbi by launching a club-record pursuit of Newcastle United talent Sandro Tonali.
Following two dismal campaigns that saw Spurs finish 17th and narrowly avoid relegation, the Lillywhites’ management have promised significant financial backing to overhaul the squad and implement De Zerbi’s high-tempo football style.
The 26-year-old midfielder has reportedly agreed to personal terms on a long-term contract, eager to link up with his Italian compatriot in North London. To secure the Italian international playmaker, Tottenham are prepared to shatter their previous transfer record – the £55 million they paid for Tanguy Ndombele in 2019 – with an internal valuation estimated between £80 million and £85 million. Although Newcastle value Tonali closer to £100 million, strict Financial Fair Play pressures may force them to negotiate.
Spurs have taken pole position after Manchester United cooled interest, though reigning champions Manchester City, rebuilding under Enzo Maresca, remain a threat. If finalised, Tonali would anchor a heavily reconstructed side that has already secured defenders Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and a £52 million deal for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke.
