Leeds Secure Historic Old Trafford Win Amidst VAR Chaos
Leeds United achieved their first league victory at Old Trafford since 1981, defeating Manchester United 2-1 to boost their survival hopes on Monday, 13 April.
Noah Okafor dominated the first half, scoring twice to stun the hosts. His clinical fifth-minute opener was followed by a deflected long-range strike that left Michael Carrick’s side reeling.
The match turned volatile in the second half when Lisandro Martinez was sent off following a VAR review for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. Carrick was incensed by the dismissal, stating, “It’s a shocking decision. Absolutely shocking.”
Despite being a man down, the hosts found a lifeline through a Casemiro header, assisted by Bruno Fernandes.
United’s late surge saw Benjamin Sesko denied by Karl Darlow, while Calvert-Lewin cleared a goal-bound effort off the line to preserve the lead. For Leeds, the win provides a six-point cushion over the relegation zone.
Conversely, United face a defensive crisis with Martinez and Harry Maguire now suspended. Reflecting on the significance of the result, Calvert-Lewin remarked, “It’s a massive result for us. We knew that coming into the game.”
Daniel Farke’s men now sit on 36 points, moving closer to English Premier League safety.
