Kasper Schmeichel Hangs Up Boots
Kasper Schmeichel officially announced his retirement from professional football following a career-ending shoulder injury.
On Wednesday morning, 27 May, the 39-year-old Celtic and Denmark goalkeeper confirmed the news to a Danish sports news outlet, revealing that medical experts have advised against returning to top-level competition as it is no longer feasible for the Leicester City icon.
Facing a year-long rehabilitation process involving torn ligaments and tendons, Schmeichel chose to focus on his long-term physical well-being: “It’s a decision that has been made for me. I have consulted with various surgeons and experts regarding my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to return to play top football. I’ve given it a lot of thought, but I believe that now is the right time.”
The injury, initially sustained during international duty against Portugal last year, was severely aggravated in February during Celtic’s Europa League clash with VfB Stuttgart.
Schmeichel departs as an undisputed legend of the modern game. Over an illustrious 13-year international career, he earned 120 caps for Denmark, famously anchoring their run to the Euro 2020 semi-finals. Statistically, his greatest club success came during a 479-appearance tenure with Leicester City, where he kept goal for their miraculous English Premier League title triumph in 2016, alongside FA Cup and Community Shield victories.
