Chelsea Legend Bobby Tambling Passes Away
Chelsea is mourning the loss of legendary forward Bobby Tambling, who passed away peacefully at the age of 84 following a battle with dementia.
A quintessential Stamford Bridge icon, Tambling was a prominent face of Tommy Docherty’s exciting, homegrown squad during the 1960s. He scored on his first-team debut as a 17-year-old against West Ham in 1959, initiating a prolific career that yielded 202 goals across 370 appearances.
For 45 years, he stood as the club’s outright leading goalscorer before Frank Lampard surpassed his historic tally in 2013. However, Tambling still retains the record as Chelsea’s all-time leading league goalscorer with 164 strikes.
During his distinguished tenure in West London, the clinical marksman lifted the English Football League Cup in 1965 and set a club record by scoring five goals in a single league match against Aston Villa in 1966. He also earned three international caps for England.
After a brief spell at Crystal Palace, Tambling moved to the Republic of Ireland, eventually settling in Cork where he managed Cork City and Crosshaven AFC. Both Chelsea and his adopted Irish home have led heartfelt tributes, remembering him as a “true gentleman”.
