Heartbreak For Brave Bafana Bafana
South Africa’s historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an agonizing end on Sunday, June 28, following a 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Making their first-ever appearance in the tournament’s knockout phase, Hugo Broos’s men fought valiantly despite a heavily partisan Canadian crowd. Bafana Bafana’s defense was anchored by excellent performances from Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Aubrey Modiba. Modiba even pulled off a crucial first-half goal-line clearance to keep the match deadlocked.
However, heartbreak struck in the 92nd minute when 22-year-old defender Ime Okon flubbed a clearance. Canada’s Stephen Eustáquio seized the opportunity, smashing the winner past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Before the clash, Okon expressed immense pride in representing his country, stating, “It’s an amazing feeling. My brother and I always hoped for the best when we were growing up, so, to be on that stage that we are on is a good feeling; it’s a blessing.”
Reflecting on the campaign, departing head coach Hugo Broos took comfort in the team’s growth, concluding, “We can already say that the World Cup is a success for us. We had expectations and hopes that we would be in the second round.”
