Pro Ref Admits VAR Mistake in Manchester Derby Winner
The English refereeing body, Pro Ref, has admitted an error after the video assistant referee (VAR) awarded Manchester City their winner in their derby match against Manchester United on Sunday, 13 September.
Striker Erling Haaland’s goal, which sealed a 1-0 win for the Citizens at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, was initially ruled offside before being overturned.
Teammate Enzo Fernandez – who was clearly offside – attempted to play the ball and appeared to impact United’s Lisandro Martinez’s defending.
Following the derby, Pro Ref issued a statement in which they acknowledged that the VAR should have recommended an on-field review, calling it an “error of judgement.”
“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place,” the statement reads.
Aside from this contentious incident, the derby also saw City’s Phil Foden being red-carded in the 23rd minute after kicking United midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
Despite all this, Manchester City’s 1-0 win leaves them sitting pretty in second place with 12 points on the English Premier League table. Meanwhile, Manchester United occupy 13th place with four points.
