Scientists Trial Game-Changing Fridge-Free Vaccine

A groundbreaking British-led clinical trial has successfully tested a room-temperature vaccine, offering a potential solution to global healthcare wastage.

Currently, the World Health Organization estimates that approximately half of all immunisations are discarded globally, largely caused by failures in maintaining strict “cold chain” refrigeration during transit and storage.

Developed by United Kingdom biotech firm Stablepharma, the reformulated tetanus-diphtheria jab (SPVX02) uses a natural sugar called trehalose – a technique inspired by drought-resistant resurrection plants – to convert liquid treatments into a stable dry powder.

Mixed with water prior to injection, the formulation proved safe, well-tolerated, and triggered immune responses comparable to existing licensed vaccines in initial human trials.

Tests demonstrate SPVX02 remains fully potent at temperatures reaching 30°C for at least two years, while enduring extreme fluctuations between -20°C and +40°C. With a larger trial involving 160 participants underway, scientists hope this technology, which could adapt up to 60 other vaccines and biologics, will achieve global deployment by 2027.

Addressing the breakthrough’s impact on isolated communities, Health and Social Care Minister Diana Johnson stated, “Right now, people are dying of preventable diseases all over the world, not due to a lack of vaccines, but a lack of refrigeration.”
