Now You See It, Soon You Won’t: Invisibility Shields are Coming!

There’s enough material in popular media and science fiction that uses invisibility as a fantastic ability or plot device, but would you believe that a British firm wants to make it a reality!

Back in 2022, Invisibility Shield Company – the name might not be original, but their product is – started a Kickstarter campaign to get their first-generation project going, and secured nearly half a million pounds from 2605 enthusiastic backers as a result.

Now, the London-based start-up is back and has launched another fund-raiser to develop the “Invisibility Shield 2.0” with pre-orders available; to date, they have secured a little over 100 000 pounds from 367 supporters and intend running the campaign until the end of May.

The team produces see-through panels that use the power of optical illusions to present whatever is behind them as unperceivable, and without the need of energy or sleight of hand.

Designer Tristan Thompson explains: “The shields use lenses to redirect light reflected from the background and the person standing behind. Because the person behind the shield is narrower than the general background, the vertical orientation of the lenses means the light reflected from them becomes more diffused when spread out (by the lenses), than the light reflected from the wider background.”

As for why they exist? They’re fun! Not to mention they’re a fascinating piece of technology, and the newer shields will be curved with improved resolution.

As Thompson puts it: “The possibilities are endless, but most important of all, these shields are great fun, they’re fun to play around with and exciting for us to make.”
