Massive Bitcoin Fortune “Found” a Decade Later

September 02, 2026

A man from the United Kingdom, who has chosen to be identified only as “Chris”, has become an overnight millionaire after successfully recovering 61 Bitcoin, now valued at over £3 million, that had been inaccessible for a dozen years.

Chris originally invested £1500 in 2011 through Intersango – formerly known as Britcoin – an early British cryptocurrency exchange. When the platform collapsed in 2014, his account, then worth around £4000, was frozen. Because the exchange was unregulated, Chris spent years watching Bitcoin’s value fluctuate dramatically.

“It was a punch in the stomach watching Bitcoin go up and up. After a while, I stopped watching it because I thought: ‘there’s no point, it’s lost’,” he recently told a news outlet.

Earlier this year, encouraged by his wife, Chris enlisted the help of legal and crypto-tracing specialists. The team discovered that his missing Bitcoin was still held in an account belonging to one of Intersango’s co-founders. Within four months, lawyers successfully proved Chris’ legal ownership, leading to the full restoration of his digital assets.

Now holding his funds on a regulated platform, Chris checks his balance multiple times daily to ensure its safety. He plans to use part of his windfall to purchase a larger home to accommodate his mother-in-law’s disabilities while keeping the remainder invested.

Chris’ success story offers a rare happy ending in the cryptocurrency world, where vast fortunes have been lost, whether to forgotten passwords or accidentally discarded hard drives.
