China’s Experimental Train Shatters Acceleration Record
A groundbreaking, experimental maglev train in China’s Hubei province has achieved a remarkable feat, smashing its own short-distance acceleration world record.
The Donghu Laboratory vehicle, weighing approximately 1 156 kilograms, reached an astonishing zero-to-799 kilometres per hour in a mere 5.3 seconds.
This surpasses its November 2025 record of 798 kilometres per hour within a similar timeframe.
While this demonstrates incredible technological advancement, passengers won’t be boarding this train anytime soon. A combination of factors – the extreme precision required, track deviations limited to a mere 0.5 millimetres, huge power demands and safety considerations – has made it unsuitable for public transport at this time.
Instead, the underlying technology is poised for applications in more specialised fields. For example, researchers envision its potential use in advanced rocketry and military capabilities, such as rapidly accelerating rockets and aircraft, thereby reducing their onboard fuel requirements.
Maglev technology – which eliminates wheel friction by levitating trains using magnetic forces – has been a mainstay in countries like China, Japan and several parts of Europe for decades.
Presently, the world’s fastest commercial maglev train, China’s Fuxing rail, operates at speeds upwards of 321 kilometres an hour. Again, though, Donghu Laboratory’s experimental train pushes the boundaries far beyond current commercial applications.
