Aviation Breakthrough as World’s Largest Jet Soars

August 19, 2026

A California-based aerospace manufacturer has successfully completed the maiden flight of its X1 aircraft, the world’s largest fully battery-powered jet.

Earlier this month, Heart Aerospace carried out the significant feat at Plattsburgh International Airport in Clinton County, New York. For onlookers below, they witnessed the 11 340-kilogram aircraft fly for 27 minutes on battery power.

And the cost of electricity that kept the X1’s battery power flowing for nearly half an hour? A total of five dollars!

Of course, the X1’s low electricity cost for the test flight doesn’t take into account other key operational expenses, such as maintenance and crew fees. Nevertheless, the true appeal lies in the potential 40% reduction in operating costs for this jet’s successor.

Indeed, the X1 serves merely as a prototype for Heart Aerospace’s ES-30 model, a 30-seat hybrid-electric commercial aircraft slated for service by 2031. It purportedly requires lower fuel and maintenance needs.

As such, major airlines have already shown interest in the ES-30, attracted by the prospect of reduced maintenance and insulation from volatile jet fuel prices.

While fully electric flight still faces a range of limitations, Heart Aerospace’s hybrid approach – combining battery power with a combustion engine range extender – offers a transitional step towards a more sustainable aviation future.
