Zimbabwean Security Forces Salaries To Be Delayed

June 20, 2016

The Zimbabwean government has announced that there will be a significant delay in the payment of June salaries to both the country’s military and police force.

This comes as the Zimbabwean government becomes more and more broke.

While the government has said that they will delay the payment of June salaries for the military and police force by two weeks, other workers that are paid by the state will not receive any salary this month.

Usually, the military gets paid around the middle of the month. However, this month, they will only be paid by June 27th, with the police force receiving their salaries on June 30th.

According to a statement by the government, other workers  which include civil workers – will not get paid in June at all, and will only receive their June salary around the middle of July.

The government has blamed ‘revenue underperformance’ as the reason for the lack of funds – a further testament to Zimbabwe’s rapidly declining economy:

“…Against the background of severe revenue underperformance and related cash flow challenges the government has been honouring its wage bill obligations, albeit, through the continuous shifting of pay dates,” a part of the statement by the government read.

According to the government, more than 80% of its revenue goes to wages. There has long since been pressure from the International Monetary Fund to decrease this percentage.
