Zimbabwe: Doctors Arrive from China

September 28, 2020

A contingent of Chinese doctors have arrived in Zimbabwe to assist in combating the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

The Twitter account belonging to the Zimbabwean Chinese Embassy posted a photo of the health workers, who arrived on Sunday, 27 September.

The 18th Chinese Medical Team includes specialists in gynaecology, anaesthesiology, urology, orthopedics, and even traditional medicine.

The team – headed by Dr Luo Weiqiang – will be working at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for a year.

Co-operation between the two nations has been prominent in recent months, with China offering medical assistance by sending several teams of medical experts to the southern African nation.

A government-enforced lockdown has kept COVID-19 numbers relatively low. However, due to decades of economic mismanagement and political instability, the medical sector has been decimated and is plagued with chronic shortages of basic supplies.

Officials state that the country has 7 812 total cases of COVID-19, out of which 227 citizens have succumbed to the virus.
