Zimbabwe: Children Swept Away by Severe Floods

March 02, 2017

The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe has said that the heavy rains experienced in the south of the country have caused severe flooding and tragically lead to children being swept away by the floodwaters.

The department did not say how many children had been swept away by the floods, but they did say that the children were all attending the Bwanya Primary School in the Chivi district in the Masvingo province of the country.

Torrential rain over the past few weeks has caused various problems for the southern and eastern parts of Zimbabwe.

In the Insiza district in the Matabeleland province, the Nkankenzi bridge has been swept away due to the rising water levels.

This resulted in the main road between Masvingo and Bulawayo having to be closed, which caused traffic to come to a virtual standstill in the city.

Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Unit has reportedly warned residents via SMS about possible landslides in the southern and eastern parts of the country.

These heavy rains have caused problems even beyond Zimbabwe, to its neighbouring countries, such as Mozambique, where the city of Beira has been severely affected by flooding.
