Zimbabwe: Activists Fight Exporting 35 Baby Elephants
Wildlife activists in Zimbabwe are attempting to halt alleged plans to sell nearly three dozen baby elephants to parks in China and Pakistan.
The group, Advocates4Earth, is trying to put the brakes on the idea – which has been in the pipeline since last year – and are suing the government over its course of action.
They claim that the authorities’ current plan to export the young animals was only delayed, because of a High Court application that was filed in May this year.
In the same month, the government announced that the sale of 90 elephants to Dubai and China had made $2.7 million.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa then told the nation in June, that the sale of wild elephants would help decrease the animal population and aid in conservation efforts.
Wildlife campaigners have claimed that the sale of the 35 baby elephants – two to Pakistan and the rest to China – has breached Zimbabwean and international animal welfare legislation.
