Zim VP: Castration Would Not Stop Rape
When discussing appropriate and effective retribution for convicted rapists, Zimbabwean Vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, stated his opinion on the idea of castration. According to the VP, castration would not be an effective way to solve the problem.
He maintained that this method of punishment would also be ineffective as a punishment for the sexual abuse of minors. According to Mnangagwa, this form of punishment would “be a step too far”.
The Vice President also stated that “the imposition of mandatory sentencing is the best practice applied in other jurisdictions such as Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa”.
However, in 2013, President Robert Mugabe, called for harsher penalties as part of measures to deal with rape. He described the crime as a prevalent issue that required more extreme measures. He in fact added that castration was something that he would be open to.
