Zambia: President Denies Aiding Rwandan Rebels

July 15, 2020

Zambia’s president, Edgar Lungu, has been accused of providing aid to a Rwanda-based rebel group.

Callixte Nsabimana, leader of the National Liberation Front (FLN), is currently standing trial for a spate of deadly attacks in 2018, which occurred in Rwanda.

Nsabimana – pleading guilty to charges of terrorism in a Rwandan high court on Monday, 13 July – claims that Lungu offered the FLN $1 million to execute a coup in the east African nation.

He further claimed that the Zambian head of state was serious about the plot, and had made a payment of $150 000 in advance to “remove [Rwandan] president [sic] Paul Kagame from power.”

However, Lungu’s spokesperson, Isaac Chipampe, criticised the claims, stating that the “allegations are false and must be treated with the contempt they deserve.”

He added: “The peoples of Zambia and Rwanda continue to enjoy strong and fraternal relations founded on mutual respect.”
