YNW Melly May Face Death Penalty
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against YNW Melly, who is facing charges for allegedly killing two of his childhood friends.
In February, the 19-year-old rapper – real name Jamell Demons – was taken into custody along with another friend, Cortlen Henry. Both were charged with the first-degree murders of Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr.
According to police reports, the “Murder on My Mind” hitmaker shot Williams and Thomas Jr in October last year in Miramar, Florida.
With Henry’s help, Melly allegedly staged the murders to make it appear that the victims were killed during a drive-by shooting.
By law of the Florida state, first-degree murder for suspects at least 18-years-old at the time of the offense is punishable either by the death penalty, or life without parole.
If state prosecutors can prove that the murders were premeditated and committed for financial gain, both Melly and Henry – who have pleaded not guilty to the charges – are likely to face the death penalty.
The pair will remain in Florida’s Broward County jail until a trial date has been set.
