Why Spike Lee Tried to Storm Out of the Oscars

February 26, 2019

Filmmaker Spike Lee attempted to leave the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday, 24 February, after he lost the Oscar for Best Picture to the film, “Green Book.”

According to a tweet by journalist Andrew Dalton, a “visibly angry” Lee – whose film, “BlacKkKlansman”, was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture – attempted to storm out of Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre, after “Green Book” was announced as the winner in the prestigious category.

Dalton explained: “[Lee] was stopped at the doors. He returned to his seat when the speeches were over.”

“Green Book” – which tells the story of an African-American pianist and his white chauffeur – has been mired in controversy, due to its factual inaccuracies and its perceived use of a “white saviour” narrative.

Speaking to reporters backstage, Lee referenced the 1989 film “Driving Miss Daisy” to comment on his loss: “I’m snake-bit. Every time someone’s driving somebody, I lose. They changed the seating arrangement … I thought I was courtside at the [Madison Square] Garden and the ref made a bad call.”

“BlacKkKlansman” ultimately won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
