Who are the Marine 5?
Everyone knows about the iconic “Big 5” animal species that inhabit the plains and valleys of Africa – the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant.
But did you know that the continent also boasts an underwater version?
The term “Marine 5” refers to the majestic sea creatures that populate Africa’s oceans. Take a look:
Dolphins
Playful pods of dolphins can be seen in both the Indian and Atlantic oceans, jumping in and out of the surf.
Penguins
Inhabiting islands off the South West Coast, penguins may be awkward on land, but they’re super quick in the water.
Seals
Almost two million seals call the seas of Namibia and South Africa home. They’re a little cautious on land, but curious when they’re swimming underwater.
Sharks
The great white shark can be found in the coastal waters of all the major oceans. It’s thrilling to encounter one of these magnificent creatures.
Whales
Whales are the biggest animals on the planet, and are popular sights on Africa’s east coast and southernmost tip.
