Western Panama Shaken by 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake

June 26, 2019

A strong earthquake with a preliminary measurement of 6.3 on Richter’s magnitude scale has hit the area between Panama and Costa Rica.

As per reports, the quake hit early this morning, Wednesday 26 June, at around 20 minutes after midnight local time (10:23 p.m. PDT), with an epicentre 44 kilometres west of the city of David in Panama, at a shallow depth of 14.4 kilometres.

Local news groups have reported no property damage or injuries but authorities remain on high alert in the central American country.

Social media users have commented on feeling a “strong shake”, whilst others shared unconfirmed reports of power outages in several areas.

One user posted on Twitter: “Guys, there was an earthquake near the border between Costa Rica and Panama. I’m about 200 km from the epicenter and we felt it A LOT [sic]. Hope everyone is ok there.”

The area around Panama experiences semi-frequent earthquakes; a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Costa Rica in 1991, killing 23 people, injuring over 500 and causing extreme damage.
