Wayne Rooney Confirmed as England Captain

December 02, 2016

Newly appointed England manager, Gareth Southgate, has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will captain England in upcoming football matches.

The news comes after Rooney was pictured two weeks ago looking rather terrible in the early hours of the morning, mingling with wedding guests at the hotel the English squad was playing.

Rooney since apologised.

Speaking to reporters at Wembley Stadium, Southgate confirmed that Rooney is indeed the captain of England:

“…Wayne Rooney is the England captain,” he said.

He continued saying that, even though Rooney is the captain, he knows not to expect to play in every game and to allow other leaders to develop in their squad:

“…I said that from the beginning of the interim period. What’s also clear is that I’ve only selected him to start in two of the four matches we’ve had…It is not a case that Wayne expects to play every game. It’s important we develop more leaders in that group,” he said.
