Vertonghen Faces Time on the Sidelines

January 18, 2017

The game between Tottenham and West Bromwich Albion on Saturday resulted in a bittersweet 4-0 victory over The Baggies. The Spurs’ celebration was dampened by an injury to defender, Jan Vertonghen, which left him in visible distress. Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino, stated that the injury “looked very bad”.

Vertonghen’s scan results, which were received last night, confirmed Tottenham’s fears. The scan indicated a ligament tear between grades two and three, an injury which will see Vertonghen sitting on the sidelines for approximately ten weeks.

This has come as a significant blow to the Spurs’ title bid. The Belgian has played 20 out of the 21 Premier League games for Tottenham this season. He was part of the defensive setup who managed to only concede 14 goals, a great achievement which was praised as the best in the league.

The star defender took to Twitter, after sharing the scan results, to thank his team and fans for the support, saying:

“Thanks to everyone for your kind messages. Gutted to be injured but will be back as soon as I can”.

Tottenham are currently second in the Premier League table. They will be facing Manchester City this Saturday at Emirates Stadium.
