USA: Texan Man Shot Dead During Anti-Racism March
A man partaking in an anti-racism march in the US state of Texas over the weekend has died after he was fatally shot.
For the past 50 days, Garrett Foster – a 28-year-old white man who previously served in the US military – had been participating in these protests alongside Whitney Mitchell, his disabled, African American fiancee.
On Saturday night, 25 July, Foster had been pushing Mitchell’s wheelchair during a march in downtown Austin, when a motorist shot him three times.
According to police authorities and witnesses, the motorist had aggressively turned his vehicle towards the protesters. When Foster – who was usually armed with a licensed AK-47 during these protests – approached his vehicle, the motorist opened fire on him.
Foster was rushed to a local hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
The motorist – along with a passenger, both of whom remain unidentified – was detained by the authorities, after he contacted the police and explained his involvement in the shooting.
