USA: Rayshard Brooks Shooting Ruled as Homicide
Yet another African American man has been killed in the United States of America.
Last Friday, 12 June, Rayshard Brooks was shot dead by a police officer at a Wendy’s fast food restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia.
Per reports, two officers administered a sobriety test to Brooks, whom they suspected was under the influence because he had fallen asleep in his vehicle at the drive-through.
However, when they attempted to handcuff him, the 27-year-old seemingly resisted. After a struggle on the ground, he grabbed one of the officer’s Taser devices and attempted to flee through the car park before he was shot twice in the back.
An autopsy report ruled Brooks’ death as a homicide.
The next day, protesters torched the restaurant, prompting police officers to use tear gas on them.
Garrett Rolfe – the officer who shot at and killed Brooks – was fired that same day, while the second officer, Devin Brosnan, was placed on administrative duty.
According to Fulton county district attorney, Paul Howard, prosecutors will soon decide whether to press charges against Rolfe and Brosnan.
Brooks’ death comes three weeks after restaurant worker, George Floyd, was killed in an act of police brutality.
