USA: Joe Biden Picks Kamala Harris as Running Mate
For the first time in the history of the United States of America, a black woman has been selected as a presidential candidate’s running mate.
On Tuesday, 11 August, Joe Biden – former US vice-president and now Democratic presidential candidate – announced on Twitter that Senator Kamala Harris would be his running mate in the national election.
This means that if Biden is elected president of the country, then Harris – who originally ran for Democratic candidacy before dropping out in December 2019, due to shortage of campaign funds – will become its vice-president.
Describing Harris as “a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants”, the 77-year-old politician added in a subsequent tweet: “I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.”
At 55-years-old, Harris is an established figure in the US political scene: in 2004, she was the first woman to be elected as the district attorney of San Francisco. Seven years later, she was the first woman of colour to be elected as California’s attorney general.
The US presidential elections take place on 3 November.
