USA: Coronavirus Response Tops Joe Biden’s Agenda

November 09, 2020

US President-elect, Joe Biden, has declared that tackling the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country will be his top and immediate priority.

On Saturday, 7 November, Biden was elected the 46th president of the United States of America, defeating incumbent Donald Trump.

During his victory speech in Virginia, Delaware, Biden announced that he and Vice-President elect, Kamala Harris, will name a 12-member task force that will mount a response against COVID-19, which has infected over 10 million American citizens to date.

He declared: “I will spare no effort, none, or any commitment, to turn about this pandemic. Folks, I am a proud Democrat, but I will govern as an American.”

The task force will be named sometime today, Monday 9 November – it is expected to be led by former surgeon-general, Vivek Murthy, and former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, David Kessler.

Among Biden’s other priorities include tackling systemic racism and climate change, as well as reversing Trump’s policies such as withdrawing from the World Health Organisation.
