US: Trump Cleared of Collusion
After a two-year long investigation which has overshadowed Donald Trump’s presidency, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has cleared him of collusion with Russia to win the 2016 US presidential elections.
A summary of the long-awaited report released on Sunday found the Trump campaign had not conspired with Russia.
However, the summary released was unclear on whether Trump had obstructed justice.
Opposition Democrats are demanding full access to Mueller’s report, which was summarised for Congress by Attorney General William Barr.
Mueller’s investigation saw some of the president’s closest former aides prosecuted and, in some cases, imprisoned, although not for collusion with Russia.
Trump has reacted triumphant to the news: “There was no collusion with Russia. There was no obstruction… It was a complete and total exoneration.”
Political commentators have suggested that Mueller’s report will bolster Trump’s chances when he stands for re-election in 2020.
