US President Donald Trump Impeached
Donald Trump made history on Wednesday, 18 December, by becoming the third US president ever to be impeached by the House of Representatives.
Per reports, the House – which makes one half of the United States Congress – voted on two charges: firstly, that Trump abused his power for political and monetary gain; secondly, that he had obstructed Congress due to his refusal to cooperate with the oversight investigation into his alleged wrongdoing.
The first charge passed with 230 votes to 197 votes in the Democratic-majority House, while the second charge passed with 229 votes to 198 votes.
As a result, Trump is expected to stand trial in the United States Senate – the upper house of Congress that is led by a Republican majority – where it will be decided if he will be removed from office.
He follows in the footsteps of Andrew Garfield and Bill Clinton, both of whom were impeached in 1868 and 1998, respectively – however, both statesmen were acquitted by the Senate and remained in office.
The trial is expected to take place early next year.
